Students are required to complete four years of English to be eligible for graduation.  Every student is expected to meet the requirements of each grade-level English course in order to qualify for promotion.

Provision is made for individual differences in terms of background and aptitude.  However, each class explores units of work common to the needs of all students: literature, writing, grammar, correct usage, vocabulary and spelling.  Each class reinforces the skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Students who demonstrate competency and interest in the required sequence may elect to participate in the work of the advanced courses.  The purpose of the advanced classes is to provide English students with a challenging college-oriented program of composition and literature.  Emphasis is placed on frequent writing of both creative and expository prose and intensive study of longer literary works of major importance.
