Hamburg Area High School Library

The Hamburg Area High School Library serves the student body of grades 9-12. The library facility houses a collection of over 14,000 books, periodicals, and audiovisual materials. Internet access is also available. Various research databases are accessible from the library, including those available through Pennsylvania's POWER Library project. Additionally, students and faculty can request materials from other libraries statewide using the ACCESS PA database.

The library is open from 7:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. daily and is available to students and staff who wish to use the books, computer resources, and other materials. Students may use the library before and after school, during their study hall periods, and with visiting classes.

Learning Objectives for Library Curriculum

  1. Understand the arrangement, procedures, services, and resources of the library.
  2. Use the library catalog effectively.
  3. Use print and electronic periodical indexes.
  4. Use the library's general and specific reference books effectively. Select, evaluate, and effectively use library resource materials for specific informational and/or recreational needs.
  5. Recognize the need for both fiction and non-fiction materials to satisfy various purposes.

Library Services

The program of instruction is planned and integrated within the school curriculum.  The use of library resources and the mastery of library skills are developed through constant use and application. Students are guided in the skills of research and encouraged to read for enjoyment. Through supervised library usage, the students become skillful users of print, non-print, and computer resources.  In addition, the librarian supports administrators, faculty, and staff in the selection and use of all types of library materials to supplement and enrich the educational environment.

Access PA

The Access Pennsylvania Database is a project of the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Office of Commonwealth Libraries. It started in 1985 as a way to provide a union catalog across the state of Pennsylvania. It was the first, and remains the largest, statewide union catalog that includes the holdings of all types of libraries. Today it represents a coordinated effort to facilitate resource sharing among libraries via the World Wide Web.

As of July 1, 2006, 2,948 school, public, academic, and special libraries have their holdings listed in the database. It contains approximately 13.5 million titles and 61 million items.
