Physical Education

Hamburg Elementary provides learning opportunities for the third-to-fifth-grade children of the Hamburg community and its surrounding neighborhoods. Their physical education program is designed to provide the children with a plethora of experiences. Time is spent developing basic skills, enhancing the use of already established skills, and exposing the children to the endless possibilities of ways to be physically active. After a foundation of skills is developed, the children apply what they have learned to participate in different types of lead-up games, and meet physical challenges. Some of these activities are designed to develop problem-solving and team-building skills, some are designed to improve their coordination, and many simply help them experience new ways to move.

The physical education curriculum provides the students with opportunities to develop an understanding of the value of practice and how to develop simple strategies. Becoming physically fit and gaining knowledge of how the body functions are incorporated into their lessons. Social interaction during each lesson helps the students learn about effective communication, good sportsmanship, and the understanding that everyone has special talents. They also discover that the process of learning, the experiences gained, and the skills mastered are more important than the score at the end of the game or who won the race.

Physical education at Hamburg Elementary is designed to make being physically active a very positive and enjoyable experience for the students. Ultimately, our goal is to help the students develop a love for movement that will last a lifetime. The curriculum includes the use of equipment that goes beyond the normal sports gear, provides lessons that come from “outside the box,” and fun that will not be forgotten!
