Proper Attire for Gym Class

Please have your children dress in comfortable clothing that does not inhibit their movement in the activities planned for class. Tight pants or overly large pants can make moving difficult. Long pants and shirtsleeves can also affect their ability to move without restrictions.

Everyone loves jewelry, however, hoop or "dangly" earrings can easily get caught in clothing or someone's hand, and could get pulled from the ear, resulting in an injury and, therefore, they should not be worn on gym day. Post earrings do not pose a safety problem.

Necklaces, bracelets, inappropriate earrings and rings should be removed prior to class and be stored in a dish provided in the gym. At the conclusion of class, the students can retrieve their jewelry and put it back on their person.

Proper Footwear

Sneakers are very important to the safety of your child's feet and ankles. Street shoes, boots, other styles of shoes other than sneakers are not designed to properly support the foot and ankle when running, jumping or performing many other forms of vigorous movement. Having their sneakers tied firmly to their feet is also very important for avoiding injuries. If their sneakers are tied loosely, when it becomes necessary to stop quickly, their foot can continue to move after the shoe has stopped and can result in an injury!

Please keep in mind that open backed sneakers can easily fall off, just like sandals and flip flops. Platform sneakers or "Frankenstein-style sneakers"(as I call them!) are dangerous, because there is great risk for overturning the ankles.

Unfortunately if your child is not wearing sneakers on Gym Day, they might be asked to sit on the side to watch for part or all of class. Participation will be determined by the type of activity designated for class that day. It is understandable that on hot or snowy days other types of footwear are more appropriate than sneakers, so please just pop their sneakers into their back packs to wear for gym class, and then when class is over, they can switch back to their other footwear. It does not make Mrs. Wolfinger happy to ask students to sit and watch class, but your child's safety is very important and she would rather see them sit for a few minutes than sit for a few weeks because an injury took place!
