Good health is a prerequisite to learning. As a matter of fact, good health is essential to most successful activities.

If a student becomes ill in school, he/she should report to the nurse. Students shall not leave the building because of illness without authorization. When the nurse is not in, students shall report to the office. A pass shall be obtained from a teacher before going to the nurse. The school health services are designed to include a variety of functions which will assist in maintaining and improving student health.

Medication Sent to School

Medicine should be sent to school only when absolutely necessary. Prescription medicine to be taken in school must be kept in the health room with prescription attached. The medication is taken in the presence of the nurse.

Many decongestants and antibiotics that are to be taken three times a day can be given before school, after school, and at bedtime without any change in their beneficial effect.

Any medications that a student is required to take during the school day must be given to the school nurse or office immediately upon arrival. Students should not have medication in their possession at any time. Medications will be given only if a note accompanies each medication and states the following:

  • The name of the student to receive medication
  • Name of medication
  • When to be given
  • Dosage:  amount to be given
  • Number of days to be given
  • Reason for taking medication
  • Doctor’s name - if prescription drug
  • Signature of parent/guardian and date

In the absence of a school nurse in the building, medicine will only be dispensed by permission of the principal.

Emergency Cards

In order that we conform to the wishes of parents, emergency cards must be filled out for each student, kept current, and returned to the health room.
