Homework and Grading Policy
Second Grade
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome to Second Grade! I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year. Communication between the teacher and parents is an important part of your child’s progress. Our academic curriculum can be challenging and we will need to work together to insure your child has a rewarding and successful experience this year. The following is an overview of this year’s homework and grading policy.
Philosophy:
Homework is crucial to your child’s academic growth and success. Homework assignments each night are designed to provide your child with valuable opportunities to review, practice, and master the concepts they have learned in school. Each assignment is important and should be completed to the best of your child’s ability. A solid work ethic and strong sense of responsibility are also learned by consistently and conscientiously completing homework assignments.
Frequency:
Your child will have daily homework assignments. You can expect your child to have a reading assignment that they must read aloud to you. Your child will also need to complete a math fact paper. Spelling words should be reviewed on an as needed basis. Homework should take about 20 minutes to complete.
Agendas:
Your child has been given an Assignment Agenda. Each day, we spend class time reviewing and copying down homework assignments in these agendas. It is expected that your child copy the assignments from the board and make sure they put everything they will need to complete those assignments in their backpacks. Please check your child’s assignments for completion and then sign the agenda. Homework is collected first thing each morning and agendas are checked for parent signatures.
Missing Assignments:
Missing assignments will be completed during recess. Work missed during an absence should be completed and returned as soon as possible. Please make every effort to pick up your child’s homework in the event of an absence. We cover a substantial amount of work each day and it can be challenging and even stressful for a child to get caught up with a lot of missed work.
Homework:
Please check your child’s Homework Folder each night and review any papers on the “Keep” side with your child. These papers should be taken out of the Homework Folder and should not be returned to school. Papers on the “Return” side are to be completed at home and returned to school the next day. It is very important that homework be completed in a quiet place. Your child will also need a pencil and crayons to complete most homework assignments. Please remember that all homework must be completed in pencil; this allows students to fix mistakes that they may have made. Give minimal but necessary assistance. Please do not do the work for them. It is also a great idea to establish a set time to do homework each night. Providing a consistent routine each night is extremely helpful and sends the message that homework is important.
Grades:
Independent work, quizzes, tests and projects will be assessed for report card grades.
Report Cards:
Report cards will be issued three times a year. Conferences are scheduled two times a year. It is very important to attend our first conference in November so we have an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress.
Communication:
If you have any questions or concerns throughout the school year, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher. By working together, we can provide the best education for your child.
Sincerely,
Hamburg Area School District Second Grade Team
