    HOMEWORK & GRADING PROCEDURE

    THIRD GRADE

    2019-2020

    Dear Parents,

Welcome to third grade!  It is a pleasure and privilege to guide and nurture your child’s education for this school year.  Third grade is a year of tremendous growth and change; therefore I want to inform you of this year’s homework and grading procedure so that we may work together in providing the best possible experience for your son or daughter.

    Homework:

Homework assignments will reinforce, supplement, and complement learning which takes place in the classroom.   Practice increases confidence in their abilities, often leading to even greater motivation and success.  Assignments may be used to encourage student discovery about people and the world around them in order to relate the information to classroom studies.  This will help students gain a greater understanding of the subject.

    Frequency of Homework:

Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday, and occasionally on weekends.   Students will be should to read each night for a minimum of 15 minutes.  Extra practice on spelling words, math facts, and preparing for content area tests is important for success.   Missing assignments will be worked on during recess.

    Agendas:

The student agendas contain daily calendars, student code of conduct, and a useful reference guide.  Students will write down homework assignments, due the next day unless noted otherwise, in the agenda.  Please check and sign your child’s agenda book each day.  Agendas will be checked for parent signatures first thing each morning.  Please help your child develop good study habits, and help guide them when necessary, however encourage them to do the work on their own.

    Communication:

Parent/teacher communication may take place via agenda, teacher pages, email, voicemail, notes, and parent conferences.

    Incomplete School Work:

Any work not completed at school may be sent home to be finished.  Work missed during an absence will be given to the student and should be completed in the same amount of time the student was absent.

    Grades:

Numerical grades will be assigned to reflect student mastery of third grade curriculum.  Grades will be calculated from the tests, quizzes, class work, and projects in each marking period for English Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science.  Grades for the report cards will be calculated from graded assignments.  Report cards will be issued three times a year.

The Hamburg Area School District’s grading scale is as follows:

        94-100% =  A

          86-93% = B

          76-85% = C

          70-75% = D

    Below 70% = F

I am looking forward to a rewarding year for all of us. Your help and cooperation in the building of a strong educational foundation for your child are greatly appreciated.

    Sincerely,

    Third Grade Team
