In my classroom I believe in helping my students develop a growth mindset. What is a growth mindset? A growth mindset is the belief that a person has control over how intelligent they are. Intelligence is not something you are born with that you can’t change, instead it is something that you can grow! It begins by understanding that the brain is a trainable muscle. As students learn new things their brain starts to make connections. The connections grow stronger and stronger the more students practice and persevere. Regardless of how challenging the task or a student’s starting point, they can learn and eventually what was once hard has now become easy!
That doesn’t mean that learning won’t be messy. In my classroom it is ok to make mistakes! In fact mistakes are embraced. Mistakes are just opportunities to learn and grow. When equipped with a growth mindset, students are ready to face challenges head on and take risks knowing that with continuous effort they will be successful.
Critical to this mindset is the power of YET. When students struggle or get stuck we work on shifting their thought process from a defeatist mindset of I just can’t do this to I can’t do this yet. I don’t know… yet. I don’t get it… yet.
There is no limit to what students can accomplish with the right mindset!
