Welcome Parents and Caregivers!
My name is Mr. Havanko, and I'm the Library Media Specialist for Tilden Elementary Center. My goal is to give students the skills needed to be effective users of information and instill a lifelong love for reading. We'll read some exciting books by popular authors and illustrators, learn parts of a book, understand the organization of the library collection, and engage in library skills that prepare students for the academic challenges ahead.
My role is to help prepare your student to be part of the digital community, to educate them in the importance of proper online etiquette, and help them develop information fluency skills. Information literacy is critical to the 21st Century learner, and librarians are essential in teaching how to locate, evaluate, and effectively use needed information. Librarians work closely with the classroom teachers in meeting various PA Academic Standards and promoting these skills. Knowing how to locate and access the best print resources and digital information will help your child succeed in school as they become lifelong learners.

About the Library
The library is the hub of the elementary school, providing students and staff with traditional materials and online resources for personal and academic enrichment. It’s the place where students come to expand their minds, read for personal pleasure, and fortify learning with an extensive collection of children’s literature and resources supportive of the classroom curriculum.
The elementary library curriculum is designed to promote an appreciation of literature and provide students with basic library skills necessary to become more effective users of information. Students and staff have access to more than more than 15,000 books, nearly a dozen periodicals, and over 300 audiovisual materials. They are also able to search the library collections of all four school buildings across the Hamburg Area School District. In addition to the physical collection, the library offers online resources, including the Internet, POWER Library, and ACCESS PA, which help expand the regular collection by virtually millions of titles.
