SURROGATE PARENTING

Become a Surrogate Parent for a special education student!

A Surrogate Parent is an advocate who deals with educational issues only. They must be at least 18 and be willing to: attend school meetings that pertain to the student (once or twice a year), keep a file of educational documents, talk with agency personnel about the student’s educational background, and work with school personnel to assure that the student is receiving an appropriate education. In addition, there is an opportunity to interact with the student as well as his guardians.

There is an application process that pertains to an individual’s character. The individual must be willing to be “trained” to learn about the special education process, which takes 1 to 2 hours. They must be willing to make a decision about a child’s individual education program (IEP).
